SUMMARY:Drawing Outside at Willowood with artist Jane Ramsey\, July (4 wks)
DESCRIPTION:New to plein air? This is for you. \nChallenged when you have tried plein air? This is for you\, too!\nLove working en plein air? Join us!\nWednesdays\, 10 am – 1 pm (3 hour) \n4 sessions\, July 8\, 15\, 22\, 29 \nThese three-hour sessions will be spent outdoors at Willowwood Aboretum finding inspiration from working en plein air. (in case of rain\, we’ll move indoors to the studio at Makers)\nThese sessions are designed to emphasize the value of working from direct observation and the joy I find sketching outdoors. I want to create a plein air experience that is enjoyable\, easy with a set-up that works best for you! \nWe will explore sketching to capture overall views where we’ll consider composition\, spatial arrangement and editing to simplify. The incredible diversity of trees found on the grounds will be perfect for doing smaller focused studies exploring shape and definition. This will be fun! \nThe “Color Notes” part is a term I use for adding color information to all or just parts of my drawings. I’ll even add small notes of information that I want to remember\, should I choose to work on it further in the studio. When used together with your photo references\, they inform and guide for creating a larger finished painting. \nOr\, these sketches can just be kept as they are. Moments of visual memories. Valuable exercises in drawing from life. \n  \nArt set-up for drawing/painting: \n\nWork in a sketchbook or paper attached to a small drawing board on your lap.\nYou can also bring your plein air easel set up. Either works.\n\nArt materials to bring: \n\nDrawing materials – pencils\, erasers\, blending stumps. Graphite and/or charcoal.\nFor adding color you can bring colored pencils and/or pastels.\nWatercolor is my chosen medium\, but you can work in something else if you prefer.\nThere are no rules on the materials used.\n\nOther things to bring: \n\nBring an outdoor chair to sit if you prefer. (There are some benches at the park.)\nPack bottled water\, snacks for when you need them.\nBring bug spray and dress appropriately for outdoors.\nHats with a wide brim are really helpful.\n\nI’ll have my favorite art supplies with me that you can try out. I always have Blackwing pencils and other supplies available individually for purchase. \n

SUMMARY:Oil Painting with Andrea Gianchiglia — July–August 2026
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\nAbout the Class\nOil painting has a richness that no other medium quite matches — and this summer\, you’ll learn to use it with intention. Artist and instructor Andrea Gianchiglia leads this 6-week series designed to build real\, foundational painting skills from the ground up. \nEach session focuses on core techniques: color mixing\, light and shadow\, composition\, brushwork\, and understanding your materials. You’ll work from photographs — either Andrea’s curated selection or images from your own collection — so your work stays personal and meaningful. Every week includes a live demo tackling a specific challenge\, whether that’s subject matter\, technique\, or a particular painting element. You can use the demo as a direct exercise or as a reference while continuing your own project — the pace is yours to set. \nThis is an opportunity to study with an instructor experienced in oil painting in an intimate\, small-group setting. Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or looking to sharpen skills you already have\, Andrea meets you where you are… \nTuesdays\, July 14 – August 18 | 10am–12:30pm | 6 sessions | All levels welcome \nMaterials\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOil paint colors — Titanium White\, Viridian\, Burnt Sienna\, Yellow Ochre\, Sap Green\, Alizarin Crimson\, Phthalo Blue\, Cadmium Yellow\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cadmium Red \nOptional: Portland Warm Grey and Portland Cool Grey (made by Gamblin)\, Ice Blue (Richeson Shiva Series)\, Kings Blue by Michael Harding \nThere are many brands to choose from. The instructor recommends Winsor & Newton or Grumbacher. Winsor & Newton has two quality grades: Professional Artist and student grade. The student grade is called Winton. The instructor recommends the Artist grade — the quality is better\, though the price is slightly higher. \nAcrylic paint — one tube of Yellow Ochre \nPalette (used for mixing paint). The instructor will go over different types of palettes in class. If you’d like\, you can wait until the first class to decide which type you prefer (use a paper palette pad in the meantime). A large wooden palette or a piece of clear glass also works great. \nPalette box — Used to store your wet palette after class and between painting sessions. Available at Michaels — it is a Tupperware-like box with a blue top and white bottom. \nTurpenoid (small container) \nLiquin by Winsor & Newton — Find this in the “mediums” section. \nBrushes — A variety of sizes recommended. Synthetic brushes are suggested for beginners. Brush variety packs with assorted sizes are available in the brush section. \nPalette knife — Metal is preferred over plastic. \nSurface to paint on — The instructor will demonstrate various surfaces in class. To start\, a canvas board or stretched canvas is recommended. Size is up to the student; the instructor suggests 11″ x 14″ to 16″ x 20″. \nSketchbook and sketching supplies — pencils\, charcoal\, erasers\, etc. \nSmall containers for painting medium — Art stores sell small metal cups that attach to your palette; Mason jars work great as well. Please bring two — one for the Liquin and one for the Turpenoid. \n“The Masters” brush cleaner & preserver — a small tub of brush cleaner in a beige-colored container. \nAny questions? Email Andrea at andrea@agillustration.com. \nCancellation Policy\nStudents cancelling at least one week prior to the start of class will receive a full refund. Within one week of the start date\, tuition is non-refundable\, as we must cover materials and instructor costs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n\n \n \n Andrea Gianchiglia\n \n\n \n \n [vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″] \n\n\n\n[/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””] \nAndrea Gianchiglia is a professional fine artist and instructor with over 20 years of teaching experience. She holds a BFA from the Hartford Art School and works full-time creating fine art and private commissions\, with a special focus on animal portraiture rooted in realism and traditional representational art. \nAndrea teaches adults and teens at institutions including the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and The Center for Contemporary Art. Through her teaching platform\, Create & Inspire\, she also offers online courses\, a supportive artist membership\, private lessons\, workshops\, and art retreats abroad to breathtaking European destinations. \nKnown for creating a fun and relaxed learning environment\, Andrea teaches through demonstrations and clear step-by-step instruction that helps students build confidence and grow their skills. As a member of the Society of Animal Artists and the Pastel Society of America\, she encourages artists to explore color boldly and often reminds them\, “When in doubt\, add purple.” \n[/vc_column_text] \n\n[vc_column_text css=””]Website: agillustration.com\, createandinspire.art \nInstagram: @andrea.gianchiglia.art \nFacebook: AGanimalart \nYouTube: @agillustration[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1774620426379-72ca6418-e834-1″ include=”29147\,29150\,29151″][/vc_column][/vc_row]\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Fundamentals in Watercolor with Jackie Pankuck: 6 wks\, Tuesdays\, May/June
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]. \nTuesdays\, 6 wks\, 5/12-6/23 (skip 6/2) \nLearning and mastering the fundamentals is critical whether you are new to watercolor or already painting.  There are critical skills that every painter needs to maker their work more fresher and more sophisticated. This series will cover skills needed by the watercolor artist to manage the paint better so you can enjoy your painting time. \nThis 6 week look at fundamentals includes: \n\nPigment strength – when\, where and how is a critically important in watercolor. Without this knowledge your paintings will look anemic and flat.\nColor Mixing – how to get the color you want\, fast.\nEdges – edge control is all about timing and pigment strength. Without this skill you paintings will be either washed out or too chaotic.\nDeconstructing a scene for the best watercolor outcome. You have to learn how to “see” and scene\, deconstruct the layers and form a strategy for executing it.\n\n \nCancelation: Studios cancelling more than 1 week ahead of the series start\, will receive a full refund. After that\, tuition is non refundable. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
