We are so lucky to have him on the East Coast and in our studio for a weekend, December 3, 4, 9-5pm. Dan will share his tremendous knowledge of drawing & painting figures with watercolor.

Workshop Details:

A focus on drawing and painting the figure.

Rendering the figure can be a challenging experience, putting a figure into your work can often make or break a good painting.

Join Dan as he shares his techniques, secrets and shortcuts to successfully drawing and painting the figure.

Day 1 – The figure by itself: proportion, finding the gesture, how scale influences amount of necessary detail and how to execute in watercolor. Day 1 will feature various examples, demos and exercises in drawing and painting the figure in watercolor. Students will do multiple figure studies and paintings in both pencil and watercolor. There will also be drawing from a live, clothed model.

Day 2-The figure incorporated as an element of interest in your paintings: Placing figures into a setting whether a landscape, beach scene, cityscape, etc. Day 2 will focus on including figures into a scene. Dan will do 2 full demos, students will paint 2 full paintings.

More about Dan:
An avid plein air painter, he is inspired by and paints a great deal of his works on location. This has helped him to develop a confident style with an immediacy and freshness infused into each painting.

Dan’s work is greatly influenced by living in the American West. He is inspired by the fading scenes of rustic farms and working ranches, framed in by the beautiful landscapes Colorado and New Mexico have to offer. Growing up on the East Coast and having previously lived in California, his work retains a strong connection to coastal and nautical life. Regardless of the subject, his unique view of the Americana aesthetic is unmistakable.

An award winning professional artist and leading name in the tattoo industry since 1995, Dan redirected the majority of his creative energy to fine art painting in watercolor since 2013. He’s been featured in Watercolor Artist Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector and Plein Air Magazine. He is also a regular contributor, writing articles about plein air painting, experiences and watercolor instruction.

Daniel is represented by the Huse Skelly Gallery in Balboa Island, CA. and Scarlowe’s Gallery in Casper, Wy. He has also had an exhibition of his work in Casper’s Nicolaysan Art Museum.

Daniel Marshall is currently based in Denver, Colorado. He can often be found plein air painting from the farms of the plains, to the ranches of the foothills and the peaks of the Rockies.
