Watercolor Travel Sketchbook Techniques with Jane Ramsey
Sunday, April 19
10 – 4pm
Planning a trip, abroad or just a fun day trip close by? A travel sketchbook is a perfect way to collect memories and experiences.
A travel sketchbook offers a convenient and low-pressure way to make art. In this workshop, we’ll explore:
- Materials and options for paint kits for travel.
- Sources for sketchbooks available in various sizes and formats.
- Sketching tools like markers, pencils and brushes.
- How to capture the essence of a scene.
- Practical approaches for easy ways to create an impressions of your travels.
- Ways to create vignettes (you don’t have to include everything you see in a painting sketch)
- Tips for making “thumbnail” impressions – quick little gesture sketches.
- Ideas for journaling and ways to make your sketchbook a personal expression.
- Fun ideas for collage and adding papers you collect in your travels.
The workshop will begin with a demo of several approaches to travel sketching along with a discussion of materials and techniques. Jane will share some examples of her travel sketchbooks. We’ll talk about the different drawing tools and paints available.
Then we’ll break into working on our own and Jane will be available for questions and help.
Pack a lunch and beverage so you can take a break when you want.
We’ll wrap up the day by gathering around to see everyone’s efforts and share in the joy of making art!
All materials will be supplied for this workshop. Just come with 5-8 photo images from past travels for inspiration to work from. You’ll leave the workshop with a small travel paint set, some watercolor postcards and travel brush ready to pack on your next trip!
