How to Draw Comic Books, Manga, and the
Art of Visual Storytelling
Ages 13+
6 Fridays from 4:30pm – 6:00pm
Welcome to the world of comic books!
Over the course of this class, with the help of Max Davenport, students will learn the fundamental methods and techniques necessary to tell a complete story
through pictures. Your child will examine what makes comics and manga special as a narrative art form, and by the end of the class students will have drawn a three page comic, completely of their own making. Although experience with drawing is always a plus, this class welcomes students of all skill levels!
Are you more interested in manga? No problem! Manga are not the same as
Western comics due to some key differences in the way they are made and consumed. The basic rules of storytelling are the same across both
mediums, so if you’d like to try making a manga in this class instead of a traditional
comic book, your child can definitely do that!
All materials are provided but your student may want to bring a notebook.
Max Davenport
Max is an illustrator and arts educator from Central New Jersey. After high
school, he attended The Kubert School where he learned how to not just create comics, but also received a wide-ranging creative education in general, from drawing to oil painting, to graphic design and animation. His first comics job was as a technical artist for a small monthly magazine, and from there he has gone on to draw and co-create three Indie comic books (TYRANT FALL, Neon Graveyard, First Place Losers) as well as work on several Dungeons & Dragons books with Wizards of the Coast and comics publisher IDW. He fills the rest of his time teaching art at a small private school in Morris County. When Max isn’t drawing his hands off or otherwise endangering them by gesturing wildly during lectures to keep students interested, he can be found keeping up with his newfound photography practice and spending time with his wife and his dog named Birdie. His work can be found at maxdavenportyo.com.
