Can’t figure out how to paint the winter landscape in watercolor? The play of light and shadow on snow can be very tricky but when it’s done well, it’s beautiful. As a resident of Colorado, Dan has spent many hours freezing out in the snow, painting plein air, to capture its magic. Luckily, you don’t have to endure the elements to be able to bring these icy feelings to your paintings. Join award winning watercolor artist Dan Marshall for an in-studio, 3 day master class on painting the winter landscape. Learn the colors of snow and the design techniques to bring a wintry feel to your work. Dan will be teaching in our new studio starting Friday, February 28 – March 2.
Schedule:
Friday, Feb. 28: 9am-5pm
Saturday, Mar. 1: 9am-5pm
Sunday, Mar. 2: 9am-1pm
We will break for lunch on Fri. and Sat.. You can bring your own lunch or we will order for you from a great local spot (we will pick it up and deliver it back to you). On Saturday night, we traditionally head out to a nearby restaurant for a group dinner with Dan. It’s always a fun time! Every is welcome to join.
He has a packed teaching and travel schedule in 2025 so we are thrilled to have him on the East Coast in New Jersey. Our studio is very accessible from all over New Jersey, as well as New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. If traveling from out of town, you can find some of the options for accommodations here.

More about Dan:
An avid plein air painter, he is inspired by and painting a great deal of his works on location. This has helped him to develop a confident style with an immediacy and freshness infused into each painting.
Dan’s work is greatly influenced by living in the American West. Inspired by the fading scenes of rustic farms and working ranches, framed in by the beautiful landscapes Colorado and New Mexico have to offer. Growing up on the East Coast and having previously lived in California, his work retains a strong connection to the landscape. Regardless of the subject, his unique view of the Americana aesthetic is unmistakable.
An award winning professional artist and leading name in the tattoo industry since 1995, Dan redirected the majority of his creative energy to fine art painting in watercolor since 2013. He’s been featured in Watercolor Artist Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector and Plein Air Magazine. He is also a regular contributor, writing articles about plein air painting, experiences and watercolor instruction.
Daniel is represented by the Huse Skelly Gallery in Balboa Island, CA. and Scarlowe’s Gallery in Casper, Wy. He has also had an exhibition of his work in Casper’s Nicolaysan Art Museum.
Daniel Marshall is currently based in Denver, Colorado. He can often be found plein air painting from the farms of the plains, to the ranches of the foothills and the peaks of the Rockies.
